French Press Mastery: The Simplest Way to Make Exceptional Coffee
The French press is the most forgiving brew method that still produces genuinely great coffee. No filters to buy, no technique to master, no electricity required. Just coffee, water, and four minutes.
What You Need
- French press (any size)
- Coarse-ground coffee (like sea salt)
- Hot water (200°F)
- Timer
The Method
Ratio: 1:15 — slightly stronger than pour-over. About 30g coffee for a standard 15oz press.
- Preheat the press with hot water, then discard
- Add coffee — coarse grind is critical. Too fine and you’ll get sludge
- Pour all water at once — no slow spirals needed. Just pour and saturate
- Stir once after 30 seconds to break the crust
- Wait 4 minutes total. Don’t touch it
- Press slowly and evenly. If it’s hard to press, your grind is too fine
- Pour immediately. Don’t leave coffee sitting in the press — it keeps extracting
Why French Press Tastes Different
No paper filter means the natural oils stay in your cup. Those oils carry flavor compounds that drip coffee strips out. The result is fuller body, richer mouthfeel, and more depth.
